Salafi Preachers Hold Dawah Forum in University Housing in Homs
A group of Salafi preachers recently organized a (islamic mission) forum in university housing in the city of . The event featured recitations of jihadist nasheeds(islamic chants) and Quranic verses that urged people towards jihad. The gathering also included lectures that promoted strict religious practices, like encouraging men to grow their beards, shave their mustaches, and avoid resembling “polytheists.”
One of the Quranic verses recited was Surah At-Tawbah, verse 111, which says:
“Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him.”
The verse clearly highlights jihad as a path to Paradise. But jihad against whom? Isn’t the already defeated?
The event also included the performance of jihadist nasheeds, with lyrics like:
“Watch for victory, an army has unsheathed the sharp sword…
We are the sacrifice for religion…”
Participants also chanted slogans calling for the establishment of an Islamic state ruled by Sharia law, with one of the main chants being:
“The people want the rule of Allah’s law.”
We don’t know all the details of the event, as only a few snippets were shared publicly.
It’s important to note that since the rise of ’s jihadist regime in , Salafi Dawah campaigns have been spreading throughout Syria. One such forum was held in the coastal city of , home to a large community, where there were calls for Alawite women to wear the hijab and other Salafi-driven provocations aimed at the Alawite sect.
In addition, the new regime has removed numerous Sufi scholars from their positions. Some were abducted, one was even killed, while moderate preachers have been banned from giving sermons in , Syria’s second-largest city. They’ve been replaced by extremist Salafi clerics from areas like Idlib.
It seems there’s a clear pattern in the actions of ’s regime, one that’s focused on pushing Syria’s Sunni population toward more Salafi extremism. This shift could have serious consequences for both internal peace and regional stability.
