📌 The United States shares Israel’s concerns about Syria becoming a base for terrorism. Both countries have clearly expressed their opposition to malign actors using Syria as a platform to destabilize the region.
📌 We know that ISIS and al-Qaeda continue to plan and carry out attacks within Syria. We also know that Hezbollah and other Iran-backed terrorists are seeking to regain a foothold in Syria to threaten Israel and other countries in the region.
📌 And we know that terrorists—both Syrian and foreign—were involved in the atrocities committed in western Syria last month.
📌 In this context, Israel has the inherent right to self-defense, including against terrorist groups operating near its border.
📌 A stable and sovereign Syria is critical for our collective security. The United States will continue to judge the interim Syrian authorities not by their words, but by their actions—especially their respect for human rights and their pursuit of justice for brutal crimes.
